At last! Classification system for climate change technologies by Justin Blows

The European Patent Office, through its espacenet patent searching portal,  now provides a classification system for renewable energy and other climate change related technologies.  This is a significant step forward because previously it was very difficult to properly search the climate change technology patent landscape – essential for developing a good patent strategy and establishing a position prior to negotiations for sale, patent disputes etc.

The top level classification – in good bureaucratic language – is called TECHNOLOGIES OR APPLICATIONS FOR MITIGATION OR ADAPTATION AGAINST CLIMATE CHANGE and has been assigned code Y02.  Sub levels appear very comprehensive, for example, there is a classification for SOLAR THERMAL ENERGY TOWER CONCENTRATORS assigned code Y02E10/41.

The classification system is still being developed, with the full dataset becoming available “in the next few weeks”.

Well done EPO!  Can the USPTO and IP Australia do this now?
