Recycling and waste reduction: It’s what the people expect by Justin Blows

According to this report, consumers are now expecting that companies will consider how their operations and products effect the environment and act to reduce the impact.

Apparently, in 2008 American consumers doubled their spending on sustainable products and services to an estimated $500 billion, according to a survey that polled more than a 1,000 people by Penn Schoen Berland Associates, a market research firm that studies the green economy.

Many companies are doing this because it saves them money.

I wonder how the impact of events like the Gulf of Mexico oil rig disaster will affect green sentiment.   Politicians, such as Barack Obama certainly seem to be making a lot of noise about the spill and the impact it will have. Such high profile opinion may push more companies towards material efficiency.  As resources such as oil and minerals are depleted, efficient use of resources will become an increasing priority.
