RET scheme changes announced by Justin Blows

The Australian government has just released this media release, announcing that the Renewable Energy Target (RET) scheme will be changed.

In short, from 1 Jan 2011 the RET will be split into:

  • A Small Scale Renewable Energy Scheme (SRES), which  appears to be targeted at small scale domestic installations; and
  • A Large Scale Renewable Energy Target (LRET), which appears to target utility scale installations,  disengaged from the SRES.

There has been much concern that the very popular domestic projects have robbed financial assistance from large scale projects making them unviable.  It appears the changes to the scheme are to address this concern.

Will the changes to RET by Minister Penny Wong save the scheme?

An interesting feature of the SRES is that it will has a fixed price of $40 per megawatt hour of electricity produced, so a 1.5 kW solar PV system installed in Sydney under this scheme will attract a subsidy of $6,200.
